Bobby remembered.
Robert Victor “Bobby” Tambling was one of the most prolific forwards in Chelsea’s history and, for forty-seven years, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. Born in Storrington, Sussex, he joined Chelsea as a fifteen-year-old in 1957 and made his first-team debut at just seventeen, scoring in a 3–2 win over West Ham United in February 1959. It was the beginning of a remarkable decade at Stamford Bridge.
Between 1959 and 1970 Tambling scored 202 goals in 370 appearances for the Blues — a record that stood until Frank Lampard surpassed it in May 2013. He remains Chelsea’s all-time top scorer in league football with 164 goals, and still holds the club record for the most goals in a single match, after netting five in a 6–2 win away at Aston Villa in September 1966. Appointed captain by Tommy Docherty, he led a young Chelsea side back to the First Division and was a League Cup winner in 1965, scoring in the final against Leicester City. He also found the net in the 1967 FA Cup final defeat to Tottenham.
Capped three times by England between 1962 and 1966, Tambling narrowly missed out on the 1966 World Cup-winning squad. After leaving Chelsea he spent three seasons with Crystal Palace before moving to Ireland in 1973, where a committed faith and a deep affection for the country kept him for the rest of his life. He won a League of Ireland title with Cork Celtic in 1974 and later played for Waterford, Shamrock Rovers and Cork Alberts, going on to manage Cork Celtic, Cork City and his beloved Crosshaven.
When Lampard finally broke his record, the two had grown close, sharing an easy and affectionate friendship. Settled in Crosshaven, County Cork, Bobby was remembered there not only as a footballing great but as a warm, humble and generous man whose stories and passion for the game were, in his club’s words, “absolutely infectious.” He died on 4 June 2026, aged 84, after a long illness. He is survived by his partner, Valerie O’Connell, and his sons, Garry and Glenn.
